Cooper Webb, a key contender in the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross series, has undergone surgery for ligament damage in his thumb, an injury sustained during a tumultuous season marked by intense competition and physical setbacks. Webb expects a recovery period of six to eight weeks following the procedure, which took place just two days after the season’s finale in Salt Lake City.

Webb’s thumb issues began after an incident with Jett Lawrence at Round 9 in Birmingham and were exacerbated during a collision with Jason Anderson in Philadelphia at Round 15. Despite the injury, Webb demonstrated remarkable resilience. “I felt like I did a really good job,” Webb stated during the pre-race news conference ahead of the finale. “I didn’t feel like it hindered me whatsoever, but like the last race at Philly, I think when I got together with Jason, that finally finished it off.”

From Rounds 11 through 13, Webb impressively closed a 21-point gap to Lawrence, even briefly sharing the championship lead. However, his momentum faced challenges in subsequent rounds. After failing to secure a podium finish in Nashville for the first time in four races, Webb managed a fifth-place finish in Denver and rebounded to clinch his ninth podium of the season in Salt Lake City.

The surgery and ensuing recovery period mean Webb will miss at least the first four rounds of the outdoor season, significantly impacting his campaign in the SuperMotocross World Championship. Currently ranked second in combined points, Webb’s absence could reshape the standings, though he is likely to remain within the top 10.

The loss of Webb adds to the challenges faced by his team, as teammate Eli Tomac, who is fourth in points, also underwent thumb surgery just before the Supercross finale. Additionally, their fellow competitor Ken Roczen, currently seventh in points, is dealing with a tibial fracture that will limit his participation in the outdoor races.

The timing of Webb’s return is crucial, as the SuperMotocross World Championship awards seeding points equivalent to those won in individual rounds. His team and fans are hopeful for a swift and effective recovery, allowing him to return to competition as early as possible and defend his standing in the fiercely competitive championship.

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross season wrapped up in Utah with a spectacular finale that saw three championships decided amid thrilling action. Former pro and NBC pit reporter Jason Thomas provided in-depth insights into the weekend’s races, offering a unique perspective on the track conditions, rider performances, and strategic moves that defined the event.

Track Conditions and Performance

The Utah track presented unique challenges due to its soil conditions, which changed significantly from the dry and slippery conditions during practice to slightly tackier conditions during the race, thanks to unexpected rain. Chase Sexton and Jason Anderson were noted by Thomas as riders who particularly excelled in these evolving conditions. Anderson, had he started closer to the front, could have been a significant factor in the race outcome.

Rhythm Lane Strategy

Thomas discussed the critical choice between going inside or wide in the first corner, affecting the entire rhythm lane sequence. Riders who drifted wide could carry more momentum, although sticking to the inside was safer but slower. This strategic decision was crucial for setting up overtakes in subsequent sections, although the track’s layout made passing particularly challenging.

Track Nature and Rider Adaptation

Describing the track in Salt Lake City as difficult for overtaking due to its slick nature, Thomas highlighted that the corners following the whoops section were among the few opportunities for making a move. However, this was also a predictable spot where riders would defend aggressively, making successful passes rare.

Championship Pressure and Opportunities

The finale often reduces pressure for some riders, allowing them to perform without the stakes of the championship affecting their choices. Justin Cooper, as Thomas noted, seized this opportunity, performing exceptionally well as he knew top contenders like Jett Lawrence were avoiding risks. Conversely, Levi Kitchen showed signs of pressure during qualifying, though he managed to regain composure later in the races.

Handling Pressure and Securing Titles

Tom Vialle, despite a shaky heat race, managed to secure his first AMA Championship by focusing on getting a crucial good start in the main event. His ability to handle pressure during critical moments was evident and pivotal for clinching the title.

Controversial Moves and Sportsmanship

Thomas also commented on Jason Anderson’s aggressive racing style, particularly an incident involving Hunter Lawrence. Anderson’s move was in line with his assertive approach, leading to an understandable retaliation from Hunter, though it might draw penalties.

Chase Sexton’s Victory and Confidence

The finale was particularly important for Chase Sexton, who needed a strong finish to boost his confidence for the upcoming series. His victory, while not directly contested by Jett Lawrence, was a crucial morale booster.

The AMA Supercross finale in Utah not only concluded the season but set the stage for the forthcoming outdoor series, leaving fans and riders eagerly anticipating the next challenges in the world of competitive motocross.

Jett Lawrence was calm, conservative and secured the AMA Supercross 450 title this weekend, and right in his debut season! The Honda rider did not take too many risks and preferred to play it safe and in the end, and after a full season, he ended up with the most desired trophy in Salt Lake City, on a day when Chase Sexton, precisely the 2023 champion, was not gave the competition a chance.

The main event started with Justin Cooper making a strong start and Chase Sexton right behind, overtaking a few corners later. The first few laps were crazy as usual, with Jason Anderson taking Hunter Lawrence off the track after the whoops section, causing him to fall.

Jett Lawrence eventually made it to fourth place behind Webb before almost losing control, dropping to sixth place. Halfway through the race, Jason Anderson focused on Webb, who was in third, while Malcolm Stewart managed to overtake Jett Lawrence, who had settled into «championship mode», just focused on the title and controlling his race and not eyes set on victory.

At the front, Sexton continued to lead, while Justin Cooper had the best race of his career in the 450 class – so far – being the fastest rider on the track with around six minutes to go.

In the end, it was Sexton with the perfect day, P1 in qualifying, victory in the qualifying race and winning his second main race of the season. Justin Cooper in second, Webb in third and Jason Anderson in fourth, were unable to complete an overtake on Webb after Hunter Lawrence, who was being lapped, decided to retaliate against Anderson for his earlier maneuver.

Jett Lawrence finished seventh and won his seventh consecutive title, becoming just the third rider ever to win the premier Supercross class in his debut season.

Team Honda HRC did super well this last weekend at Denver in the AMA Supercross 450, with both Lawrence brothers ending up on the highest steps of the podium and, once again, with Jett getting to win for eighth time this year, on his debut season at the category.

The rider goes to the last round of the championship with 20 points more than the second placed, which means he is super close of getting to close the circle on the wins at the 450 categories (as he won already the AMA Pro Motocross 450, in 2023.

‘It’s an awesome accomplishment to get my eighth win in my rookie season, but the bigger story of tonight is Hunter and I going first and second, for the first brothers to ever do that!’, he said in a team statement, he who followed behind his brother until halfway of the race, then overtaking him with the championship in mind:

Hunter was holding a really good pace all race, but I knew I had to get those extra of couple points for next weekend. But it did feel like we were home at the Dog Pound [practice facility] all race, just Hunter and me following each other.

If any doubts could still persist, they will practically be clarified and Jett Lawrence has everything it takes to guarantee the title in the AMA Supercross 450 after a new victory, the third in a row, in the championship yesterday in Denver, on a day when his brother, Hunter, was also in a big way and achieved the best result of the year so far.

In the main event of the night, the #96 started in the best possible way and got the holeshot at Empower Field, with Chase Sexton going to the ground right away. Jett Lawrence was second and Justin Cooper third but would end up being beaten, a couple of laps later, by Eli Tomac.

Hunter continued at the front and was leading against Jett, who didn’t seem too keen on attacking the lead while Jason Anderson was third at this stage, three seconds behind #18, and with the places somewhat spread out, the first real “battle” took place further back between Sexton and Tomac, with #3 ending up being beaten moments later not only by the (still) champion, but then by others who were further behind.

With the race roughly halfway through, Jett overtook his brother and from then on did not give up the position, leading until the end of the race, which gave him his eighth victory of the year and a decisive step towards the title, especially after Cooper Webb not having had his happiest day, being fifth. Hunter Lawrence and Anderson took the other podium places respectively.

Jett Lawrence and Max Anstie emerged as the winners of the AMA Supercross in Philadelphia. The 15th round of the season took place this Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

In the main category, 450SX, Lawrence (Team Honda HRC) took the holeshot in the main event and led from start to finish, gradually increasing his advantage. He had a lead of over six seconds at one point, but lost some ground on the last lap and crossed the finish line 5.031s ahead of Chase Sexton.

The Red Bull KTM rider engaged in a fierce battle for second place, ultimately prevailing over Jason Anderson (Monster Energy Kawasaki). The top five was completed by Cooper Webb and Eli Tomac, of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing.

As for the 250SX East, Seth Hammaker (Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki) took the holeshot, leading for much of the race ahead of Anstie. The British rider from FirePower Honda Racing overturned a gap that was over two seconds at one point, made the pass on lap 12, and never looked back.

Thus, Anstie won with a 1.111s advantage, with Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM) in second, and Haiden Deegan (Monster Energy Star Yamaha) in third. His teammate Daxton Bennick finished fourth and Chance Hymas (Team Honda HRC) concluded in fifth. Hammaker ended up seventh.

Last night, the AMA Supercross 450 had a scary moment involving Ken Roczen, who crashed in a crash after a problem that everything suggests was related to the shock absorbers on his motorbike. The rider was treated badly and will undergo an MRI scan tomorrow to assess his real state of health.

The incident happened completely unexpectedly and will be investigated, as #94 explained: ‘We are doing some investigation as my shock body only had about 3h on it and we have never seen it malfunction like that. It wasn’t a seal or anything. The bottom cap/housing or what ever you want to call it completely exploded’.

Roczen regretted the incident, especially at a stage in the evening’s main event when he was well placed to attack the front of the race, then behind Eli Tomac, and said he doesn’t yet know when he’ll be back: ‘What a bummer. It was shaping up to be a good battle. But once again you can’t take a ol German oak out just like that, we’ll be back. I just don’t know when yet lol’.
