Moto2 had its last major technical change with the introduction of Triumph engines in 2019 – more powerful – and new electronics. Thus, the bikes became more similar to those in MotoGP.

On the other hand, Moto3 remains practically identical to when it was created in 2012, even if the experience requirements for participating riders have changed – including the new minimum age of 18.

Luca Boscoscuro, owner of SpeedUp in Moto2, admitted to GPOne.com that he would like to have more powerful bikes in the intermediate class, but he believes that Moto3 is the one that needs a major technical change:

I would like to have 30 to 40 more horsepower, but the regulation that is not correct is that of Moto3. Now, with the minimum age set at 18, the bikes are too small, the boys have to grow a lot physically. At that age they are two meters tall, in fact, they train with 600cc bikes and then compete with 60hp bikes, something is wrong.

Fermín Aldeguer is one of the most promising Moto2 riders at the moment and has already secured a contract with Ducati to move up to MotoGP in 2025. However, this year has not been easy for the SpeedUp/Boscoscuro rider.

After five rounds, he has only one victory and another podium finish, placing him third in the championship. He has not yet shown consistency in top positions and is 26 points behind the leader, Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro).

In an interview with GPOne.com about talented riders who have passed through his team, Luca Boscoscuro highlighted the importance of joint work with the rider before discussing Aldeguer’s 2024 season:

This is fundamental for achieving results; if the rider and the team work well together, the bike becomes competitive. Fermín has very high potential and uncommon abilities. This year he hasn’t got into that gear yet; he hasn’t been on the lucky side of the season. […]. He is doing well, but Moto2 is the toughest category, and when everything isn’t at 100 percent, it’s hard to even be in the top ten.

Over the years, SpeedUp/Boscoscuro has been growing in the Moto2 World Championship and is now a serious rival to Kalex. In fact, four of the top five riders in the championship at this point ride bikes from the Italian manufacturer. But is MotoGP part of their future plans?

Team owner Luca Boscoscuro was asked by GPOne.com if this idea had ever been considered. In response, he admitted that realizing their ambitions in the premier class would be difficult:

It’s logical that this would be the top, but to make such a leap, you need the basics, including at the economic level. Going there just to participate is not my ambition; I would like to fight to finish in the top five, and that is much more difficult nowadays.

On the other hand, Boscoscuro was not entirely pleased with the 2027 regulations: ‘In my opinion, the reduction in displacement is too small. I think that by 2027, 850cc engines will already have the performance of 1,000cc ones. From the aerodynamic point of view, it’s good that they are eliminating the height adjustment devices; I didn’t expect anything else. I was expecting more restrictive regulations because the bikes now are beautiful, but they are very, very fast’.

Despite being injured, Arón Canet was in the fight for the podium in the Moto2 French GP almost until the end, although he finished in sixth place. In fact, it was only on the last lap that he lost the chance to finish in the top three.

The battle with Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team/Kalex) resulted in contact on the final lap, which disadvantaged the Fantic Racing rider – with the American managing to overtake and finish fourth, without a penalty.

This was despite the contact between them at that stage of the race. Canet admitted, quoted by Motosan.es, that the decision of the race direction left him angry, due to the rules communicated to the riders at the beginning of the season:

If we were in another era, it would have been fantastic. But here, in the end, you don’t even know where to take it. Because they say if you touch a rider on the last lap you have to give back the position. You no longer know what to take, what rule to follow. And of course, I was angry. I understand it can be a racing situation, but I was even more upset with the race direction, because they are the ones who tell you in the season ‘don’t touch anyone on the last lap, otherwise we can penalize you.

For several years, the Moto2 World Championship has been dominated by Kalex bikes. However, since 2023, this monopoly has been changing. Boscoscuro has become increasingly competitive, and at the start of this season, the small Italian manufacturer has taken the lead.

After five rounds, Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro) leads the championship with 89 points and two victories. In second place, seven points behind, is Joe Roberts (OnlyFans American Racing Team), the only Kalex rider in the top five of the championship.

For the first time, Boscoscuro has a partner team, the newcomer MT Helmets-MSi. The Spanish team is performing well: besides having García in the lead, Ai Ogura is in fourth place, having achieved a podium last Sunday in Le Mans. The Japanese rider is tied in points with third-placed Fermín Aldeguer (SpeedUp).

The Spaniard, who has secured a move to MotoGP for 2025, is 26 points from the top and has yet to confirm his status as a clear favorite for the title. His teammate, Alonso López, is in fifth place in the championship and already has a victory.

In fact, there has only been one race that Boscoscuro did not win in 2024: the Portuguese GP, where Arón Canet prevailed on a Kalex in the Fantic Racing colors. In the constructors’ championship, Boscoscuro leads with 113 points, 15 more than Kalex, with Forward in third and last place without scoring. MT Helmets-MSi leads the teams’ standings with 152 points, followed by SpeedUp with 117 and OnlyFans American Racing Team with 111 points, closing the podium.

There it is, Sergio García won in great style today’s Moto2 race at Le Mans and became the new championship leader. This result, with a great performance, is a reward and result from the work done during the years, he believes.

‘It’s amazing. The race was super hard because I was always pushing in the front and the gap wasn’t super big so I had to keep pushing until the last laps, last corners but I am super happy’, he began to say in parc fermé, before saying that, to achieve such result, he had to work a lot during a lot of time:

– I think it’s the result of the work I have been making for a lot of years. Let’s continue like this and I want to dedicate this victory to my dad.

Sergio García dominated the French GP in Le Mans! From the start, the MT Helmets – MSI driver took the lead in the race and was, from the first moment, in the lead and even in the last seconds he had confirmation that his teammate, Ai Ogura, would accompany him on the podium with the second place. Alonso López, with two mistakes at the end, almost ruined everything.

Everything is ready for the start of the intermediate class GP, with the front row made up of Arón Canet, Joe Roberts and Sergio García.

García had a tremendous start and from very early on began to escape the competition, with Roberts in pursuit and Manuel González in third place after gaining three places at the start. Alonso López was fourth and Albert Arenas fifth.

The pole-taker, Canet, was seventh and had the fastest lap on the track while García led the events with 0.916s with a couple of laps completed. López however beat González and was the new third placed, moments before Barry Baltus fell.

Canet was growing, already in fifth place and again with the fastest lap, in 1:35.818s and it didn’t take long for him to move up to fourth position. González was fifth.

Zonta vd Goorbergh crashed at turn 8 but stayed on the track, while Canet once again gained a place and rose to third with a brilliant maneuver on López. Soon after, González unexpectedly crashed in turn 14 while in fifth position!

The fight for second place was super intense and with a protagonist in the spotlight, guess who? Not anymore: Canet was the new runner-up.

García was leading but saw his gap drop by half a second in the space of a couple of laps, from 1.9s to 1.4s.

This is how the top ten looked with the race halfway through:

Diogo Moreira was another casualty in the race, with the Brazilian abandoning with problems with his bike. García led with 1.788s over Canet, with the #44 in turn having 1.382s over López.

A little further behind but still hoping to reach the podium were Ai Ogura and Fermín Aldeguer:

The race was progressing towards the end but there were still seven laps to run. This was the top ten, in this order: García, Canet, López, Roberts, Ogura, Somkiat Chantra, Aldeguer, Albert Arenas, Tony Arbolino and Izan Guevara.

Xavier Artigas fell and thus joined Baltus among the riders who were out of the race. Moreira, who had stopped with problems with his bike, returned to action and was behind González who, despite also having crashed, continued his battle.

In this «League of the Last Ones», Daniel Muñoz was one lap behind, Zonta vd Goordergh two, just as González and Moreira were three.

Ogura continued his climb in the race and had just overtaken Roberts and reached fourth position. Roberts was mathematically out of the lead in the championship, with it provisionally held by García.

The intensity that Canet put on the track very early on could dictate problems and the truth is that #44 was actually overtaken by López: Canet was being slower than usual, probably due to some extra wear on the tires and in an instant the situation became even more complicated.

López made a mistake and was too fast and to resume the ideal racing path he had to brake and this allowed Canet, Ogura and Roberts and Chamtra, who is fighting for second place, to come together with two laps to run.

López again made a mistake and Ogura didn’t forgive and overtook, with the race ending soon after and MT Helmets – MSI getting a 1-2!

García was the winner, Ogura second and López third.

Still there was history for Boscoscuro, with three bikes in the top three. Kalex, with 12 years of always achieving podiums, saw that record end today.

Áron Canet, coming from Q1, was the highlight of Moto2 qualifying at Le Mans, with the Fantic Racing rider securing pole position for Sunday’s race.

After Zonta vd Goorbergh, Áron Canet, Senna Agius and Izan Guevara had secured their place in Q2, it now remained to be seen who would be the fastest in this Le Mans qualifying in the intermediate class.

Alonso López and Filip Salac were the first to top the timesheets, with almost half of the drivers yet to record a fast lap.

Manuel González meanwhile recorded the best lap so far in 1:35.453s, 0.161s ahead of López, with Guevara in third.

The session was about halfway through and, as usual, the drivers headed to their teams’ garages to prepare for the final assault on times and pole position. Tony Arbolino still didn’t show a competitive time, coming in 17th, the rider who won last year’s Moto2 GP in France.

Áron Canet meanwhile moved to the front of qualifying with just over two minutes to go, with Joe Roberts coming in second. 0.136s separated the riders.

Fermín Aldeguer, 11th, was struggling, while Sergio García made his way to the front row, third for the time being. Senna Agius crashed soon after.

It was precisely the Spaniard, who will be in MotoGP in 2025, who was attacking pole, but something happened and the #54 lost a lot of time.

In the end, it was Canet who secured pole position in Moto2, with Roberts and García joining him on the front row of the grid. Many of the times achieved at the end were canceled out due to the yellow flag on the circuit.

The lineup of 18 riders set to participate in the second qualifying session of the French Moto2 Grand Prix is complete. Zonta van den Goorbergh will be among them, having led the Q1 session in Le Mans.

Competing with an injury, Arón Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex) didn’t give up on securing a spot in the pole position battle and consistently featured among the top four. He even briefly led the standings with his second flying lap.

However, he was later surpassed by van den Goorbergh (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP/Kalex), who was only 0.024s faster. Senna Agius (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP/Kalex) posted the third-fastest time, ahead of Izan Guevara.

The Spanish rider from CFMoto Inde Aspar secured advancement early on in his second flying lap, finishing fourth with just 25 milliseconds ahead of Darryn Binder (Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP/Kalex)

Another record fell this morning in Le Mans. Manuel González set the fastest ever Moto2 lap at the circuit during the second practice for the French Grand Prix.

Fermín Aldeguer (Folladore SpeedUp/Boscoscuro) was the first to complete a flying lap, but after the initial laps of most riders, González (QJMotor Gresini/Kalex) was in the lead. The Spaniard was then overtaken by Marcos Ramírez (OnlyFans American Racing Team/Kalex), who then strengthened his lead.

However, he was beaten by Sergio García (MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro). He managed to hold onto the top spot for almost 13 minutes before González set the lap record: 1m34.868s. Until the end, nobody managed to beat the Spaniard, who was 0.227s ahead of García.

Third was Jeremy Alcoba (Yamaha VR46 Master Camp Team/Kalex). In the fight for direct access to Q2, the last to achieve it was Barry Baltus (RW-Idrofoglia Racing GP/Kalex) in 14th, with a 0.021s advantage over teammate Zonta van der Goorbergh. Among the other riders going to Q1 is Arón Canet (Fantic Racing/Kalex).
