The battle went down to the wire in the first race of the World Supersport 300 championship at Assen. Daniel Mogeda clinched victory in a thrilling race filled with ups and downs, where the unpredictable weather conditions added to the challenge and made the outcome uncertain.

Jeffrey Buis, competing on home turf for Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing, made a strong start from tenth on the grid and led at the end of the first lap. However, he suffered a crash on the third lap, also involving José Julio García from Kove. The incidents early in the race led to a red flag being waved. Buis was examined and declared unfit due to a concussion, requiring hospitalization.

When the race resumed, Loris Veneman of MTM Kawasaki took the lead for the next five laps until being overtaken by Mogeda of Team#109 Retro Traffic Kawasaki on the second lap. However, Mogeda faced fierce competition from a group of 16 riders all vying for the lead.

Galang Hendra Pratama from ProGP NitiRacing led at the start of the final lap, but it was Mogeda who made a decisive move in the last corner to secure the victory. He crossed the finish line just 0.083 seconds ahead of Unai Calatayud from ARco Sash MotoR University Team riding a Yamaha. Iñigo Iglesias from Fusport-RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki completed the podium, followed by his teammate Petr Svoboda. Veneman rounded out the top five finishers.

Fenton Seabright clinched his first pole position in the World Supersport 300 championship this Friday. The rider secured the top spot in the Superpole at Assen, held under rainy conditions at the iconic Dutch circuit.

Throughout the session, lap times improved considerably: starting above the two-minute mark, with the fastest riders in the final classification clocking in at 1m55s. Several riders took turns leading the pack.

However, notable performances came from Aldi Satya Mahendra (Team BrCorse/Yamaha), Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki), and Unai Calatayud (Arco Sash MotoR University Team/Yamaha).

It was about ten minutes before the end when Seabright set the best time of 1m55.372s, edging out Mahendra by 0.016s. Petr Svoboda (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki) later improved to take third place, 0.176s behind.

Veneman was pushed to fourth place, sharing the second row of the grid with Galang Hendra Pratama (ProGP NitiRacing/Yamaha) and Samuel di Sora (Arco Sash MotoR University Team/Yamaha), who narrowly edged out Calatayud.

Julio García González (Kove) set the fastest lap in the final moments of the Superpole, but lost the chance to secure another pole position as his lap was invalidated. He will start from 28th position.

Almost a month later, the Superbike World Championships are back. The «Cathedral» of Assen hosts the third round of the WSBK and WSSP season, as well as the second round for the World Supersport 300 Championship.

In Superbike, Nicolò Bulega (Aruba.it Ducati) leads with a 12-point gap over his teammate Álvaro Bautista and Alex Lowes (Kawasaki). The Italian will try to defend his position, but in recent weeks he underwent arm surgery due to arm pump and may still be somewhat physically limited.

Toprak Razgatlioglu (ROKiT BMW) is fourth in the championship, 16 points behind the leader. The Turkish rider has already won with the German manufacturer and aims to repeat the feat in Assen… in the country of his teammate, Michael van der Mark, who will also try to fight for top positions. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team/Ducati) is absent due to injury, replaced by Nicholas Spinelli.

As for WSSP, the championship is tight in this early stage. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team/Ducati) leads with just four more points than Marcel Schrötter (MV Agusta), followed by Stefano Manzi (Pata Yamaha Ten Kate Racing) with an 11-point margin. Federico Caricasulo (Motozoo ME AIR Racing/MV Agusta) is fourth, 32 points behind, and will try to regain ground, as will Adrián Huertas (Aruba.it Ducati), who is fifth, 35 points off the lead.

WSSP300 has its second round of the year. Iñigo Iglesias Bravo (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki) and Aldi Satya Mahendra (Team BrCorse/Yamaha) are tied at the top of the championship with 28 points, three more than Jeffrey Buis (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing), who has his home round in Assen. The top six are separated by just eight points, and mathematically, anyone could overtake the leaders this weekend.

Iñigo Iglesias Bravo made his debut victory in the World Supersport 300, by prevailing in the second race in Barcelona. It was a historic race, where Kove became the first Chinese manufacturer to step onto the championship podium.

The pole position was secured by Julio García González (Kove Racing Team), who turned out to be one of the protagonists in the fight for the top positions throughout an unpredictable and thrilling race. At one point, there were 20 riders in the leading group, and in the end, the top 12 were separated by less than one second.

On the final lap, the main fight was between Iglesias and González, with the Fusport-RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki rider emerging as the winner by just 0.064s. González had to settle for second place, which is still historic: it gave Kove the first podium for a Chinese manufacturer in WSSP300.

In third place was Bruno Ieraci (Team ProDina Kawasaki), who fought for the podium until the end. He beat Daniel Mogeda (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kawasaki) by just 27 thousandths of a second. The top five was rounded out by Petr Svoboda (Fusport-RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki). Despite finishing only in sixth, the winner of Saturday’s race, Aldi Satya Mahendra (Team BrCorse/Yamaha), leads after the opening round. He has one more point than Bravo.

The beginning of the World Supersport 300 season could hardly have been more thrilling. Jeffrey Buis claimed the win in the first race at Barcelona, where seven riders finished within less than a second at the top positions.

Julio García González (Kove Racing Team) lost pole position due to an infraction committed during warm-up, resulting in a three-place grid penalty. Consequently, Daniel Mogeda (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kawasaki) started from pole position. However, by the end of the first lap, the Spaniard had dropped to fifth and never managed to return to the front positions.

Matteo Vannucci (Pata Yamaha AG Motorsport Italia) led at the end of the first lap and was one of the protagonists in the battle for the win throughout the race, alternating at the front with several riders – Buis (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing), Unai Calatayud (ARCO SASH MotoR University Team/Yamaha), Iñigo Iglesias Bravo (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki), Mirko Gennai (MTM Kawasaki), and Aldi Satya Mahendra (Team BrCorse/Yamaha).

In a breathtaking battle, Buis emerged victorious on the final lap, crossing the finish line practically side by side with the second-placed Mahendra, separated by just 0.040s. Samuel Di Sora (Arco Sash MotoR University Team/Yamaha) completed the podium in third position, 0.227s behind, with Petr Svoboda (Fusport-RT Motorsport by SKM-Kawasaki) and Loris Veneman (MTM Kawasaki) rounding out the top five.

Julio García González secured pole position this Friday for the opening round of the Supersport 300 World Championship, held in Barcelona. It’s a historic result, marking the first time a Chinese manufacturer – Kove – has achieved a pole position in an FIM world championship.

It was within the first five minutes that the Spanish rider set the lap time that gave him pole position, clocking in at 1m55.313s. Prior to that, Filip Novotny (Accolade Smrz Racing BGR/Kawasaki), Matteo Vannucci (Pata Yamaha AG Motorsport Italia), Bruno Ieraci (Team ProDina Kawasaki), and Kevin Sabatucci (Team Flembbo-PL Performance/Kawasaki) had taken turns leading.

Although González was never surpassed, other riders behind him improved their times. Daniel Mogeda (Team#109 Retro Traffic Kawasaki) came closest, just 44 thousandths of a second behind, followed by Vannucci at 0.093s. Sabatucci will start from fourth, ahead of Ieraci, while Petr Svoboda (Fusport-RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki) rounds out the second row of the grid in sixth.

For the first European round, WorldSBK riders will have two development solutions already tried in testing: an SC1 front and an SCX for the rear.

Following the two testing days on Thursday and Friday last week, the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit, also known as Montmelò – from the name of the municipality in the province of Barcelona in which it is located, will host the second FIM Superbike World Championship round of the season, the first in Europe after the exciting Australian debut.

The riders in the WorldSBK class will have two new tyres available, one at the front and one at the rear. In the first case, it is an evolution of the standard SC1 in specification C0516 and it has been developed by Pirelli with the aim of obtaining greater stability. To do this, with no variations in terms of compound, changes were made to the structure. The riders have already had the opportunity to try this tyre in early season tests, including those from last week on this circuit.

As regards to the rear, the new innovation is a development SCX, more specifically an evolution of the B0800 which was widely used last year by riders. This new option differs in terms of both compound and structure: the C0900 specification, aimed at increasing stability and performance. This development ‘super soft’ made its debut in testing last week and is now also available for the actual races.

Barcelona is well suited to introducing new tyres

‘For us, Barcelona is an ideal circuit to introduce new tyres, first of all because the race weekend arrives shortly after two days of testing on this very track; therefore, we already have some data available, and also because this is a fairly demanding track for the tyres so it is an excellent proving ground to immediately understand if a solution has weak points. This year we bring two new tyres with the aim of further improving performance and stability compared to the standard solutions. The development front SC1 has already had good feedback both in the two tests carried out at the beginning of 2024 and in the one of last week, and for this reason it was a natural choice to add it to the race allocation. We have less information on the new C0900 rear, only coming from last week’s tests;  it is a solution that follows in the footsteps of the B0800 introduced in 2022 and already widely used in 2023, we proposed it to the teams for the test last Thursday and Friday and the feedback was positive, which is why we decided to include it in the allocation for the race. High top speeds are achieved on the Barcelona circuit and riders should benefit from the greater stability offered by these new options’.

· Tyre allocation: in addition to the new tyres already mentioned above, WorldSBK riders will have standard SC1 and SC2 at the front and SCX and SC0 at the rear available, beside the SCQ exclusively intended for the Superpole and Superpole Race. The choice narrows in WorldSSP, where riders will be able to choose between SC1 and SC2 for the front and SCX and SC0 for the rear.

· Lap times: In last week’s testing, WorldSBK riders consistently ran times in line with 2023 best race lap times, also beating the all-time lap record. If the weather conditions remain similar, it is likely that times will drop further during the race weekend, as track conditions improve and the teams finalise their setup.

· Weather: so far the championship has visited Montmelò in September and May but never in March; therefore, the weather conditions could represent an unknown. Lower temperatures and the possibility of rain could have an impact on the work in preparation for the race, although the recent tests should have provided important elements to finalise the setup and make the tyres work as well as possible.

· Young riders at the start: the Catalan round will also see the kick off of the season for the young promises taking part in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, of which Pirelli has been the sole supplier since its inception in 2017, and in the R3 bLU cRU FIM World Cup.

There are adjustments to the World Superbike calendar for this year. The Supersport and Supersport 300 World Championships are also affected, as the round that changes dates is Jerez.

The Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto continues to host the last round of the season. However, the round is postponed by one week to October 18-20 (originally scheduled for October 11-13). According to a statement, the postponement responds ‘to the dynamic demands of the local events calendar and the request of the township of Jerez de la Frontera’.

This is the only adjustment, with the start of the season still set for February 23-25 at Phillip Island. Before that, on February 19-20, the same Australian circuit hosts the only official test of the year for WSBK and WSSP.

Calendar for WSBK, WSSP and WSSP300 for 2024:
February 23 to 25: Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit (Phillip Island, Australia)
March 22 to 24: Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Montmeló, Spain) – with WSSP300
April 19 to 21: TT Circuit Assen (Assen, Netherlands) – with WSSP300
June 14 to 16: Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli (Misano Adriatico, Italy) – with WSSP300
July 12 to 14: Donington Park (Castle Donington, United Kingdom)
July 19 to 21: Autodrom Most (Most, Czechia) – with WSSP300
August 9 to 11: Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Portimão, Portugal) – with WSSP300
August 23 to 25: Balaton Park Circuit (Balatonfőkajár, Hungary)
September 6 to 8: Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours (Magny-Cours, France) – with WSSP300
September 20 to 22: Cremona Circuit (Cremona, Italy)
September 27 to 29: MotorLand Aragón (Alcañiz, Spain) – com WSSP300
October 18 to 20: Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto (Jerez de la Frontera, Spain) – with WSSP300

An unusual concept has been approved for the new season of the Supersport, Supersport 300, and Women’s World Championship (WorldWCR): the first race will serve to define part of the starting grid for the second race of each round.

The most unusual aspect is how this will happen. It will not be the absolute positions that count, but rather the lap times: the first nine positions of the starting grid will be established based on the fastest lap times in Race 1.

This is one of the new format changes for 2024. As we have already reported, WSSP and WSSP300 will only have one free practice session, with Superpole moving to Friday, and warm-ups taking place before the races on Saturday and Sunday. The same applies to WorldWCR, making its debut.
