British Superbike legend Shane “Shakey” Byrne is seeking £1 million in compensation following a career-ending crash at Snetterton circuit in 2018. The six-time British SBK champion sustained severe spinal injuries after crashing into the protective tyres during a testing session. Byrne has filed a lawsuit against Motorsport Vision Racing, the circuit owner, and the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Board of Control, claiming that better protection should have been used at the high-speed section where the crash occurred.

Byrne’s legal team argues that airfences should have been installed to prevent such injuries. Airfences are known to provide better protection in high-speed crashes compared to traditional tyre barriers. The absence of these safety measures, they argue, directly contributed to the severity of Byrne’s injuries. They claim that the organisers failed to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of riders, especially in high-risk sections of the track.

The defendants, Motorsport Vision Racing and the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Board of Control, counter that the accident was unforeseeable and that the injuries were primarily due to the crash itself, not the barriers. They argue that the protective measures in place met the required standards and that such an incident could not have been predicted. Their defense hinges on the assertion that even with airfences, the outcome might not have been significantly different given the nature of the crash.

Judge Bruce Blair is set to decide the case, which could set a precedent for how safety measures are evaluated and implemented in motorsport events. The legal battle underscores the ongoing debate about the responsibilities of race organizers to protect riders and whether current safety standards are adequate.

Byrne’s case has garnered significant attention within the motorsport community, highlighting the risks riders face and the importance of continuous improvement in safety protocols. Fans and fellow riders have expressed support for Byrne, emphasizing the need for stricter safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Statements:

Shane Byrne: “My accident could have been mitigated with better safety measures. The lack of proper protection at a high-speed section is unacceptable.”

Defense: “The type of accident was not reasonably foreseeable, and the primary cause of the injuries was the crash, not the barriers.”

This legal battle highlights the ongoing debate about safety measures in motorsports and the responsibilities of organizers to protect riders.

The Oulton Park round of the British Superbike Championship (BSB) couldn’t have gone any better for Glenn Irwin. The Hager PBM Ducati rider won all three races this weekend.

Kyle Ryde (OMG GRILLA Yamaha Racing) took pole position, but in the first race, his teammate Ryan Vickers took the lead at the start, with Ryde in second and Irwin in third. Still on the first lap, Irwin moved up to second, and by the second lap, he became the new leader, never to be dethroned.

Second place went to Christian Iddon (Oxford Products Racing Ducati), who climbed to the position on the fourth lap and finished 1.069s behind the winner. Ryde completed the podium ahead of Tommy Bridewell (Honda Racing UK), while Vickers finished fifth.

In the second race, Irwin’s dominance was even more evident as he led from the first lap. However, he had to withstand Bridewell’s pressure until the end, with the rival reaching second place on lap eight with a pass on Iddon. He finished just 0.352s behind at the finish line. Iddon secured another podium with third place, ahead of Danny Kent (McAMS Racing Yamaha) and Ryde.

With a strong start, Iddon took the lead in the third race, leaving Irwin in second before managing to hold off the opponent until lap 12 when he was overtaken at Hizzys. From then on, the two continued in an animated battle for victory, with Irwin ultimately prevailing by just 0.128s. Vickers finally secured the podium and even closed in on the top two in the final stages, but finished 0.511s behind. Kent was fourth, just over a tenth away from the podium, with Leon Haslam (ROKiT Haslam Racing BMW) in fifth.

If the crash alone wasn’t «that» big, what happened right after was, as Hickman and his bike were projected to the track air fences, slowing down both the rider and the bike, but that came with a big mess, leading the session to be red flagged.

Ryan Vickers overcame a huge last lap moment at the final corner to claim his first Bennetts British Superbike Championship winning double at Circuito de Navarra for the OMG GRILLA Yamaha Racing team, crossing the line 0.277s ahead of Danny Kent and Kyle Ryde.

At the start of the race, Ryde had launched to the front from Kent and Vickers, but by the fifth lap, the McAMS Racing Yamaha rider had made a decisive move into turn one to take the lead.

Kent was able to hold off his rivals until lap nine when Vickers stormed back ahead and despite Kent and Ryde pushing him hard, the OMG GRILLA Yamaha Racing rider was determined and maintained his advantage to lead the standings ahead of Oulton Park. His Yamaha rivals Kent and Ryde completed the podium line-up.

It was disappointment for Bridewell when he was forced to retire from the podium fight on the ninth lap. The Honda Racing UK rider had carved his way through to third from his row three start, proving his pace on the new Fireblade.

It was a strong race for Leon Haslam as the ROKiT Haslam Racing BMW Motorrad rider claimed fourth place with the edge over Christian Iddon on the Oxford Products Racing Ducati and the Completely Motorbikes Kawasaki pairing of Jason O’Halloran and Max Cook.

Glenn Irwin had a more difficult race two to finish in eighth place for the Hager PBM Ducati team ahead of Charlie Nesbitt and Peter Hickman who completed the top ten. It was also disappointment for Rory Skinner who was forced to retire, whilst Fraser Rogers was unhurt after a fast crash at turn four.

Hot hot news at the Bennetts British Superbike Championship, as Tommy Bridewell made an amazing team switch for 2024, were he will make his title defence now onboard the all-new Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP.

The current champion will also be racing with the #1 on his bike of Honda Racing UK as he bids to become the first rider to win consecutive titles on different manufacturers.

The last rider in the Championship to successfully run and defend the number one plate was Ryuichi Kiyonari with Honda Racing UK in 2007, when he won consecutive titles on the HM Plant Honda.

Bridewell completes Honda Racing UK’s three-pronged assault on the Bennetts British Superbike Championship alongside teammates, Andrew Irwin and Dean Harrison.

Bridewell said after the confirmation: ‘I am so excited to join such a prestigious brand, it is every rider’s dream to ride for Honda at some point and to bring with me the number 1 plate is just fantastic. The timing feels right, I have achieved my championship goals and now I am entirely focused on defending the title. I am coming here to Honda to do just that, to win another championship’.

And added: ‘I have always made my decisions on instinct and I always follow my gut, the opportunity here at Honda is something that I have always wanted to do and it was an easy decision to make. I’ve chosen to come to Honda as I feel this is the best team to help me defend my championship. Tommy Bridewell celebrated an emotional 2023 Bennetts British Superbike Championship title in an incredible Showdown decider, finishing second behind BeerMonster Ducati teammate and title rival Glenn Irwin to take the crown by an unprecedented margin of just half a point.

Ryan Vickers got the strongest launch off the line to take the lead for LAMI OMG Racing Yamaha, but Omolgato pole-sitter and championship leader Bridewell was immediately on the attack. Bridewell first took a look at Surtees, aiming to make early progress whilst Irwin was further back down in sixth.

As it reached the second lap Kyle Ryde was on the move, diving ahead of his teammate Vickers before launching a bold attack on Bridewell to take the lead at Dingle Dell. Meanwhile, Irwin started to really move towards the front, climbing through to fourth to leave Vickers as the only rider between the two BeerMonster Ducati teammates.

Irwin began to size up his next move on lap four with an initial look up the inside of Vickers at Surtees and then again at Hawthorn. He was forced to wait until lap six though, when he eventually made a move stick at Hawthorn after an earlier bid at Druids.

As the pack rocketed onto their seventh lap, there was nothing to separate the two main title rivals, whilst Ryde continued to lead with nothing to lose. Irwin then made an incisive move on Bridewell at Surtees, and with the latter’s loss of momentum at the apex also allowing Vickers past, meaning virtual championship lead changed for the first time.

The momentum seemed to be with Irwin as the race sped towards its halfway point, as he began to apply the pressure on Ryde. He wasn’t able to make a move stick, meaning that Bridewell once again seized back the provisional series lead when he passed Vickers at Hawthorn on lap nine.

The championship picture changed once again on lap 11 when Irwin made the most of a strong run out of Surtees to pass Ryde at Hawthorn. The Yamaha attempted to make the most of its cornering ability to fight back straight away, but he was forced to settle into second as the leaders exited Stirlings, and this once again put Irwin in a position to potentially take the crown.

Bridewell refused to give up though, passing Ryde with a similar move at Hawthorn just two laps later. Ryde once again attempted to take the position back immediately but couldn’t get ahead.

Over the tense laps that followed, Irwin seemed to have just enough speed to keep clear of those chasing, but Ryde seemed to be sizing up a move on Bridewell. Ryde’s attempts at Stirlings and Paddock Hill Bend amounted to nothing though as Bridewell continued to hold onto second and the championship lead as it stood on track.

With just four laps to go, the drama ramped up when Irwin made a slight error at Paddock Hill Bend which was enough bring Bridewell and Ryde back onto his rear wheel. Both riders attempted to make a pass stick under the braking at Druids as they ran three-wide and it was Ryde who emerged with the race lead, with Irwin just behind and Bridewell third.

Irwin briefly regained the lead and an effective championship advantage at Hawthorn before Ryde launched back past as Irwin ran slightly wide on the exit of Westfield. By the time they exited Dingle Dell and leaned into Sheene Curve, Ryde was at the front with Irwin and Bridewell right behind him.

The balance shifted again on the penultimate lap of the season when Irwin produced a rapid drive out of Surtees to pass Ryde at Hawthorn and once again move into the title seat. This left Bridewell needing to pass Ryde with just a lap and a half of the 2023 Bennetts BSB campaign left to run.

The decisive moment came at Druids on the final lap. Bridewell produced a strong run through Paddock Hill Bend to set up a run on Ryde into the tight right hand corner before outbraking him and holding the position as they fired down Graham Hill Bend for the final time.

By this point, Irwin had managed to build a bit of a gap which he held to the chequered flag. But with Bridewell’s second position was enough to take the title by the slimmest winning points margin in series history. Ryde followed the BeerMonster Ducatis home to take third and ensure that the top three riders in this year’s standings shared the final podium of the season.

After a strong start to the race, Vickers fell a bit further behind those ahead but fourth place was still a solid end to a year in which he became a Bennetts BSB race winner for the first time. Leon Haslam continued his consistent 2023 form to complete the top five.

This is the first title of the rider at BSB after being 3rd on 2014, 2019 and 2022 (Yamaha and Ducati – two times).

The motorcycling community in Britain is mourning the loss of Jamie Kelman, a 37-year-old rider who competed in national races and road races such as the Olivers Mount Gold Cup and the Southern 100. Jamie Kelman tragically passed away on October 5th due to severe injuries sustained from a serious accident during a race at Brands Hatch on September 30th.

The news of his passing was communicated by Kelman’s family through a message shared on their social media platforms. The message read: “After some good races at the last Bemsee (British Motor Cycle Racing Club) meet at Brands Hatch, unfortunately, Jamie was involved in a race accident and after a tough fight, he passed away on Thursday night. Nothing he loved more than racing on two wheels (and winning) and being with his racing family. Thank you all for the love and support you’ve already given our family. We will share details for his final ride when it’s organized.”

The British Motor Cycle Racing Club, where Kelman was a member, also released a statement shortly after the family’s announcement. The club stated: “With great sadness, the club reports the loss of our member Jamie Kelman. He suffered a severe injury during the second YPM race on Saturday, September 30th at Brands. He was attended to by the Bemsee medical team and was airlifted to King’s Hospital. After a strong fight, he sadly succumbed to his injuries on October 5th. Jamie had been a long-standing member of the club since 2017 and began his racing career in the Green Senior series.”

“He moved on to the MRO 600s for a while, and more recently competed in Thunderbike Sport and Yamaha Past Masters. He was also a regular in road races in the UK. He will be greatly missed as a very popular member of the Paddock; his youthful appearance hid his actual age, just 37 years. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his girlfriend Sara, his friends, and family during this challenging time,” the statement concluded.

Kelman had several trophies and national titles to his name. In 2018, he clinched the Team Green Senior 300 championship riding a Kawasaki Ninja and subsequently achieved various successes in road races like Oliver’s Mount. He last competed in July, riding his Kramer 690.

Motorcycle Sports extends its condolences to Jamie Kelman’s family and friends.
